Couples Therapy for Brooklyn Couples

Most Brooklyn couples we see start by video from their own living room, and some come into Manhattan for the harder sessions. Both work. What matters is that the sessions keep happening.

Two ways to do this from Brooklyn

By video, anywhere in the borough. Parents in Park Slope and Fort Greene often take the session after bedtime from the couch; couples in Williamsburg and Bed-Stuy who work opposite shifts sometimes join from two different rooms. A HIPAA-compliant link, nothing to install.

In person at 352 7th Ave, between 29th and 30th Street. From Atlantic Av–Barclays Ctr or Grand Army Plaza, the 2/3 runs straight to 34th St–Penn Station in about twenty minutes. From Jay St–MetroTech, Fort Greene or Bed-Stuy, the A/C goes to the same station. From Williamsburg, the L to 14th St and one transfer to the A/C/E or 1/2/3.

What Brooklyn couples bring in

  • The same argument on a loop — money, chores, in-laws, whose career gets to move
  • A new baby, or a second one, and a relationship that has turned into logistics
  • Recovering from an affair, or from a breach of trust that was not an affair
  • Partners from different cultures, faiths or families negotiating what a marriage is supposed to look like
  • LGBTQ+ and non-monogamous couples who want a therapist they will not have to educate
  • Deciding whether to stay together — a legitimate reason to start

How couples therapy works here

Two or three sessions of assessment first, so both of you leave with a description of your pattern you both recognize. Then the work is live: we slow down the moment where things go wrong and build what is missing — usually the ability to say what is underneath the anger before it turns into contempt or silence. The approach is emotionally focused and Gottman-informed.

Sessions run 60 or 75 minutes with Terese D., LMFT-LP. Most couples do better with 75. We are out-of-network with all insurers; where your plan accepts out-of-network claims, we file on your behalf.

Questions

What people ask

Do you have an office in Brooklyn?

No. Our New York office is in Midtown at 352 7th Ave, about twenty minutes from Downtown Brooklyn on the 2/3 or A/C. Many Brooklyn couples work with us entirely by video.

Can we do some sessions by video and some in person?

Yes. A common rhythm is video most weeks and an in-person session when something big needs to be worked through.

Do you offer marriage counseling for couples in Brooklyn?

Yes. Marriage counseling, premarital counseling and couples therapy are all available to Brooklyn couples, by video or at our Midtown office.

How much does couples therapy cost?

$240 for 60 minutes and $300 for 75 minutes with Terese D. We are out-of-network; where your plan accepts out-of-network claims, we file on your behalf, otherwise we provide superbills.
