Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples

EFT treats recurring conflict as an attachment problem rather than a communication-skills problem. The fight is not about the dishes; it is about whether you can reach each other.

How EFT works

  • De-escalate. Identify the cycle — typically one partner pursues and one withdraws — and name it as the shared enemy.
  • Restructure. Each partner learns to express the vulnerable feeling underneath their usual move, and to respond to their partner's.
  • Consolidate. New responses become the default, including under stress.

Why we lean on it

It has the strongest outcome research in couples therapy, and it is durable — the gains hold up at follow-up rather than fading once sessions stop.

Questions

What people ask

How is EFT different from the Gottman method?

Gottman is behavioral and skills-forward; EFT works on the emotional bond underneath the behavior. Good therapists borrow from both, and we do.
